Chapter 12

“I’ll take a dozen caramel and pecan muffins,” I said to Patti over the counter at Sprinkles the next morning.

“Sure thing. You’re up early.” She grabbed a box and placed the muffins inside.

“I’ve got some apologies to make.”

“Oh! Who are you apologizing to?”

“I may have accidentally blasted Dominic off his feet. I blame Frank.”

“Ah, I wondered if your demon was being tricky.” Patti placed the box of muffins on the counter.

“What makes you say that?” I handed over some money.

“Your eyes are red.”

I frowned and scrubbed my eyes. “He’s not all that excited about Aurora’s upcoming wedding.”

“He’s the only one who isn’t. I can’t wait. I got a new outfit and am getting my hair done. Although I saw your sister with pink hair yesterday. Is she trying out a new look for her special day?”

“Something like that.” I grabbed the box of muffins. “She’ll be back to blonde by the big day. Thanks for these.” I headed to the door and walked outside.

Wiggles was drooling against the window. “Some of those had better be for me. Dominic doesn’t need all those muffins to show him you’re sorry.”

“He may share one with you. And he does deserve them. He was trying to keep everyone safe, and I hurt him with magic.”

We walked into Angel Force and headed past the reception and into the main office.

I stopped and looked around. Everything was neat. Not just normal neat. It was like someone had gone around with a ruler and straightened everything. All the angels worked quietly at their desks with their heads down. No one was talking.

“Where are all the cookies?” Wiggles returned from the coffee table, which was usually strewn with food. “Don’t tell me everyone’s on a diet.”

One of the angels looked up from her desk and pressed a finger to her lips.

“What’s going on?” I said.

She pointed over her shoulder. “The auditor is here.”

Dazielle’s office door opened. A woman I’d never seen before breezed out. She was dressed in a fitted cream suit and had long silky blonde hair. I could tell she was an angel from the enormous wings, but she had a sharp look about her.

Dazielle spotted me. She froze for a second before gesturing at me to leave.

The woman she was with turned and stared at her. “What are you doing?”

“Oh, nothing. Shall I show you the archive room?” Dazielle shot me a look of desperation.

“Not yet. I want to speak to some angels on duty.” The woman looked at me and tilted her head. “Who is that? She’s not an angel.”

“No, but she’s not important. She’s not part of my team.” Dazielle hurried along beside the woman as she strode over to me.

Not important? I’d be sure to remind Dazielle of that the next time there was a murder she needed help with.

The sharp looking angel peered down her nose at me. “And you are?”

I shrugged. “Not important enough to be bothered with, apparently.”

Dazielle sighed. “This is Tempest Crypt.”

“Why are your eyes red, Miss. Crypt?” the woman said.
